Is it just our Grody Fascination , or did Hitler Have a Sex Life???
OK: Hitler and sex...uck. gag.
We never, ever, EVER think about Hitler as a sexual being. His public image always embodied an uncomfortable juxtaposition of virile masculinity, and asexuality. But, is it now possible to understand something of the private life of this infamous freak?
Look at these:
or, how about this one:
I know, I know. This one is hysterically funny.
And, finally...
Well, father of the country, or sex maniac? Honestly, no one really knows. What follows in this post, are the speculations (gossip???) about, what I think we can both agree, is an icky subject.
Alright. Let's begin . In all the propaganda, Hitler's body was shown as that of an extraordinarily virile man: an ideal for Germans to both emulate, and admire. Any photograph taken during his tenure as dictator, were carefully choreographed. No truly candid photograph of Hitler exists, to my knowledge.
Well maybe this one...
Incredible , isn't it?
On one thing historians and contemporaries agree: his public persona was carefully crafted. In other words, he was the virile, physical embodiment of a healthy empire, much like the absolute monarchs of old. Nazi Germany was the epitome of what anthropologists describe, as a 'cult of personality.' It's exactly like it sounds.
In his later life, he was noted by almost everyone as paranoid, and historians agree with the perception of Hitler as a classically paranoid personality. Still others have described him as a paranoid schizophrenic. Honestly, we'll never truly know, but evidence about the private side of Hitler is slowly emerging. One source, is the intriguing collection of interrogations by Russian intelligence, of German POWs, who had actually served the Fuhrer. One of these guys was Otto Günsche, who was Hitler's private adjutant.
During his time as a prisoner of the Soviets, Gunsche revealed that once Hitler was informed that it had been hard to hire some serving girls. He exploded, saying: "I stamp whole divisions into the dirt!" he bellowed. "And I can't get a few more serving sluts for the Berghof?" What a guy, eh?
One comment that I find interesting about Hitler, is how Wallis Simpson said (after meeting him with the Duke of Windsor in 1937) that she was alternately "fascinated and repelled" by him. Not that this means very much, but my point is that his private side was dramatically different than his public image.
One side note here...who the hell spends their honeymoon in Nazi Germany? F*&k. Make of that what you will.
Historians today are fascinated by Hitler's private life, and they are morbidly hanging off the rafters about any information on his sex life. Did he have one? With who? Was he a sexual predator? Who were his lovers? Did he have a sexual birth defect?
Let's start with the conventional wisdom. We know that the freak was involved with several women as an adult.
The first relationship that we know about, was with his niece, Geli Raubal.
Ick.
She was a daughter of Hitler's half sister. When she moved from her parent's home, she asked her uncle, if she could move into his unoccupied Munich apartment. He agreed, with enthusiasm-- he had always adored her. Now, we don't know that they actually rode the wild sausage together, but their relationship was reportedly weird--contemporary sources indicate that Hitler he apparently forbade her from wearing revealing clothes without his express permission. She became noticeably depressed. Later, after Geli's parents arranged a marriage for her (yeah, they were still doing that in those days), Hitler flipped out, forbidding the union. Reportedly, he became insanely possessive of her, gradually controlling more and more aspects of her life.
Not every sexual relationship has to involve intercourse, does it? At some point, his behavior must have become intolerable for her. On a morning after Hitler had left for a party rally, Geli took one of his revolvers and shot herself. She did not survive. She was 23.
Alright, who's next?
Helen Hanfstaengal. She was the wife of Hitler's "Harvard Man," Ernst, who later said that ole Adolf was "delighted with my wife, who was blonde, beautiful, and American."
Hitler was enamored of Helene, and she apparently reciprocated, as he was often at her house, where would talk excitedly about the future of Germany. Ernst later wrote that Hitler had "one of his theoretical passions" for her, but was unable to consummate the relationship. He believed him to be impotent, although there is no proof for this. Helene also shared a similar opinion of Hitler, pronouncing him a “neuter."
One thing we do know: in November, 1923, Hitler led a failed attempt to take over the German government. History recognized this as the "Beer Hall Putsch." After this bungled attempt led to the death of more than 10 of his supporters, Hitler fled the scene, to Helene's home. There, he proceeded to have hysterics, at one point picking up a pistol, threatening to kill himself. She scolded him, grabbing his arm and taking the gun. He then sat down, and put his hands over his face. Thereafter, he was arrested.
And, then there was Maria Reiter...
I hope that you're noticing I am including pictures of each gal with Hitler.
Hitler met her while she was working in a shop in the Obersalzberg., According to a conversation she later held with a relative, Hitler, then 37, began pursuing the 16-year-old girl.
Whoa.
He asked her out. At the end of the date, he made a clumsy sexual advance. She rebuffed him. But, she later recalled that she let him kiss her. ?????? After this, they had a few rendez-vous, Eventually, Hitler became increasingly distant. She later said, that he, at one time, had spoken to her of marriage and Aryan kids, but he also talked about his duty to the Fatherland. Christ. Donnez-moi une break.
Not long after this, he broke off the liaison. Inexplicably, she was plunged into a depression ( Uh, I'd be standing on my head with joy). In 1928, she tried to hang herself. But, she was incredibly lucky--Maria's brother in law found her, got her down, and saved her life.
Shortly after this, Reiter gave up on Hitler and married local hotelkeeper, Ferdinand Woldrich.
...which brings us to Renata Muller:
Renata muller, a well known German actress, was of interest to Hitler—gossip at the time speculated endlessly on their relationship. A story surfaced after her death, attesting to a conversation she had, with a fellow thespian: he remembered (here say alert!) later her despair about an affair with ole Alfie, telling him (again, gossip warning!!) that one evening, he’d asked her to undress and urinate on his face. OMG. Yuck. But, who knows if it’s true? It certainly is salacious.
So, what happened to her? After a brief illness (depression?), she was committed to a hospital, where she threw herself out a window.
Uh huh.
Let me tell you about this great bridge for sale, in Brooklyn…
And then there was Unity Mitford--an Englishwoman who was also the sister in law of England's leading fascist, who apparently had a crush on Hitler. Ohhhkay.
As a young woman in the thirties, Unity was entranced by Hitler. This is also understandable, because she had grown up in a household culture, that can only be described as bigoted (read, fascist). Once she was ensconced in her Munich, she began her quest, by regularly eating at Hitler's favorite restaurant, the Osteria Bavaria (ick). It took several months, of meeting his eyes across the dining room, but he finally asked her to dinner. He does not appear to have been impressed by Mitford, but he reportedly liked the fact that 'Valkyrie' was her middle name.
Hitler really really really really liked Wagner.
Unity eventually became a member of Hitler's inner circle. She accompanied him to public events, including the 1936 Olympic Games. Unity became increasingly anti-semitic, during her time in Germany and relationship with Hitler. In articles for various German newspapers, she referred to the Jewish population as a "danger" to the country, and declared herself to be a "jew hater." She was really proud of that.
Unity's friendship? Sexual bond? Infatuation? Came to an end in 1939, when war was declared on England. I guess this was just too much for her. Contemporary accounts reveal that she begged Hitler not to war on her country. He was not moved. No one knows exactly why, but shortly after this exchange, Unity tried to kill herself with another pistol of Hitler's (are we beginning a fashionable trend here?).
Unity survived the attempt. Hitler was reportedly affected. He paid her medical bills, and when she was diagnosed with brain damage, arranged for her to be taken across enemy territory, to be cared for by her family in England. She died nine years later from meningitis.
Notice any themes here? You should.
And, finally, there’s Eva Braun…, But, you know all about her, don’t ya?
And we all remember her death: cyanide? A gun? The Bunker?
One of the things we look for, as historians, are repeating patterns. While there is no hard proof of these liaisons in terms of traditional methods (i.e. letters, ghostly interviews, etc.), there is abundant circumstantial evidence.
